All pulled from boutique and family run wineries these 6 stood out from our trip to Georgia where we tasted over 200 wines to select what came back to the states.
In 2015, scientists studying the history of agriculture uncovered ancient clay vessels dating back 8,000 years at an archeological dig in southeastern Georgia. Researchers analyzing the residue contained within the vessels—the remains of grapes and grape seeds—dated the material to 6000 BCE. This establishes ancient Georgia as the first known location of grape winemaking. (except from winesgeorgia.com)
They have identified over 525 grape varietals and all six of the wines we chose showcase grapes indigenous to the area, several were lost/destroyed during the Russian occupation and have since been discovered in only a few locations.
